F aced with the usual colourful display of ceramics at auction,
many potential buyers could be put off taking the plunge into
collecting as so much appears the same. But Bearnes Hampton &
Littlewood's Exeter sale on Wednesday in the Alphinbrook Road rooms
there is an even greater selection of collectables, with several
pieces of unusual treen - one of which was an old trick that earned
the odd pint or two for the owner.
Using sleight of hand, the turned wood trick cup and ball set
could make the red or black "ball" disappear and reappear at will,
to the chagrin of any unsuspecting audience having to foot the bill.
This set, just 4in (11cm) high has obviously been well used, but is
