David Clensy meets Hank Adlam, a Bristolian veteran who flew as
a Royal Navy pilot throughout World War II
T he frustration is visible in Henry "Hank" Adlam's knotted brow
as he talks about the Fleet Air Arm: "the least appreciated section
of the armed forces during World War II and ever since," he says
with a shrug of his shoulders.
The 87-year-old veteran pilot shakes his head and stares out of
the window of his Harbourside flat, watching the boats bobbing up
and down on the Floating Harbour.
As the Fleet Air Arm celebrates its 100th anniversary, Hank has
become one of the last remaining pilots who fought in the Royal
Navy's own version of the air force from the very start of the war.
