Following the Irish electorate's rejection of the Lisbon Treaty
last summer, I was appalled to hear the European Union's Ambassador
to the US, John Bruton, defend in a recent BBC interview the Irish
Government's decision to stage a second referendum later this year.
When presenter Stephen Sackur questioned the democratic nature
of such a vote, Mr Bruton said: "The Irish have a right to
reconsider the way they voted and after numerous concessions are
secured the treaty should be sent back to the electorate for
approval." This is the kind of arrogance we have come to expect
from Euro politicians every time the result of a treaty referendum
doesn't go their way.
