Article: Johnson rejects talk of leadership bid

ALAN Johnson yesterday played down speculation that he was launching a covert leadership bid with his call for sweeping electoral reform.

The Health Secretary - tipped to succeed Gordon Brown as Labour leader - insisted an article calling for proportional representation was simply outlining ways to empower the voter, rather than paving the way for Mr Brown to be ousted.

However, a Labour source said Mr Johnson was "open" to the idea of standing for the leadership.

"The truth is, if Alan stood against Gordon, he would win hands down. Gordon has no support in the PLP [parliamentary Labour Party] anymore," the source said.
