Article: Multi-million pound firm began life as milk business in 1880

Northern Foods is one of the best-known businesses in Hull.

The shoots for the multi-million pound company began as early as 1880 with Pape and Co Ltd, a small condensed milk-importing and wholesaling business in the city.

But the business officially began life in 1937 at Holme-on- Spalding Moor, near Market Weighton, as a family-run dairy, started by Alec Horsley.

In 1942, the business was registered as Northern Dairies and it became a public company in 1956. The firm changed its name to Northern Foods in 1972 to reflect the range of products it sold.

In the late 1970s, in partnership with one of its customers, Northern Foods pioneered the development of the chilled ready meal.
