House Finance Chairman Harry Keith White, D-Mingo, has been the cleanup guy in more ways than one in recent weeks.

The affable 63-year-old former Navy pilot, who served in Vietnam, jokes he's the most popular delegate this time of year as the Legislature tackles the next state budget.

White has fielded numerous amendments and requests from colleagues seeking additional funds for pet projects - attempts that have been derailed due to the need for a fiscally responsible budget in these tough economic times.

White, however, spent the past few weeks doing a different sort of job, entrenched in what he deemed a "war zone" a good 80 miles from the splendor of the golden Capitol dome.
