IT ALL STARTED with a grumpy old man, some balloons and a house floating in the sky.

Pete Docter, director of Emeryville-based Pixar's new "Up," says he and writer Bob Peterson "were making a list of things we wanted to play with in terms of animated films. And a grouchy old man with an extreme attitude, a get-off-my-lawn kind of guy, just seemed like a fun character to play with. He would be funny instead of off- putting."
