Consumers in the South West have experienced the smallest fall in retail prices in the country over the past year, according to new figures.

Research published today by the Halifax indicated that prices in the region fell by 0.3 per cent between the first quarter of 2008 and the same time this year.

This was below the UK average fall of 1.3 per cent. London saw the biggest decline in retail prices, at 2.8 per cent.

But the effect had more to do with reduced mortgage interest payments than falling prices in the shops. Clothing and footwear was the only other major spending category where prices decreased, while food and drink costs ...
