A beach-side wedding reception nearly ended in tragedy when a
bride and groom had to be rescued from the waves after they went out
to surf in treacherous tides.
The couple were holding a wedding reception at the Blue Bar, on
the stunning Porthtowan Beach, in West Cornwall, when their big day
almost took the worst possible twist.
The newlyweds, thought to be beginner surfers, took their boards
into the sea - oblivious that lifeguards had just warned all
inexperienced swimmers to leave the water because of dangerous
conditions at about 6.15pm on Thursday - just minutes after the
lifeguards had gone off duty.
Within moments, they were swept onto cliffs in a strong rip tide.
