Taken for a ride: Among recipients of Westmoreland County's
Annual Tourism Grant (Tax Redistribution) Program was Idlewild &
SoakZone park in Ligonier, which received $20,000. Grants are funded
by one-third of the revenues from the county's 3 percent hotel room
tax. This will benefit a business that's part of a conglomerate now
owned by Parques Reunidos of Madrid. And this, to market a park
where cars were lined up on its opening weekend. No doubt another
shrewd county investment.
The whiners: How do you close a more than $3 billion state budget
deficit, incurred by reckless spending, when special interests
oppose any cuts? You don't. Some Westmoreland Republican lawmakers
tried to explain ...
