Article: Ex-Winfield coach to challenge state law

WINFIELD - A former Winfield High School basketball coach is challenging a state law that he says discriminated against him and cost him his job.

Paul Sutherland, former coach of the Winfield High School girl's basketball team, filed a suit in Putnam Circuit Court Monday against the county Board of Education.

According to the suit, the school board violated Sutherland's constitutional rights by hiring another teacher solely because that person had a teaching certificate and Sutherland did not.

Under state law the board of education must show hiring preference to a certified teacher for coaching positions, "without regard for the non-teacher's current position, qualifications, seniority, ...
