Article: Sides differ over San Leandro Hospital finances

SAN LEANDRO -- The color red is central to the back-and-forth argument over whether San Leandro Hospital should remain open.

First there's the red ink of the hospital's financial problems. Then there are critics' charges of "redlining" -- that the hospital's operators may be trying to exclude some neighborhoods or residents from receiving its services.

Doctors, medical labor unions and some community residents see the color chart differently than does Eden Medical Center of Castro Valley, the Sutter Health affiliate that has operated San Leandro Hospital since 2004.
