Article: Farming: Pay us a fair price or milk will run out, dairy farmers warn stores

DAIRY farmers throughout Europe are continuing to press for a realistic price for their milk. Last week's "dairy summit" in Edinburgh gave an indication of how strongly producers feel on this issue. Unfortunately all the major supermarkets, with the exception of Morrison, declined to attend the meeting and explain their point of view.

However, a range of organisations, including NFU Scotland and Dairy Farmers of Scotland, have now written to retailers calling on them to pay a decent price or risk a shortage of liquid milk before long. Production in the UK is at a 37-year low and falling as an increasing number of farmers exit the dairy sector.
