UN envoy says no model imposed on Cyprus

NICOSIA, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations can help Greek and Turkish Cypriots during the peace talks but will not impose any reunification model on Cyprus, UN envoy Alexander Downer said here on Wednesday.

"The role of the United Nations is to do what it can to help the two sides," said Downer. "But the United Nations isn't in the game of writing blueprints."

The UN Secretary General's Special Advisor on Cyprus made the remarks following the 31th meeting between the leaders of the two rival communities since last September in the UN-controlled buffer zone, which has separated the eastern Mediterranean island for decades.
