1st LD: Mauritanian junta leader suspends election campaign

DAKAR, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Mauritanian junta leader Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz suspended his campaign to run for president on Wednesday after rival parties reached an agreement to postpone the June 6 vote the previous day in Dakar, the capital of Senegal.

Abdel Aziz announced his campaign suspension at a rally held in Akjoujt, 250 km north of the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott, according to information monitored here.

Mauritanian politicians agreed to postpone the disputed presidential elections to July 18 late Tuesday, after painstaking negotiations opened on May 28 in Dakar.
