On sunny weekends Trentham Gardens lived up to its name as the playground of the Potteries. It took off as a pleasure resort in the 1930s after the ballroom, swimming pool and miniature railway appeared on the estate left behind by the Duke of Sutherland. For the next 50 years Trentham Gardens was a target for generations of families, whose Victorian ancestors visited Trentham Park after the Duke opened it to the public.
