FAIRFAX COUNTY
A man who won a retrial from the Virginia Supreme Court in 2007
after being convicted of five felonies in a rape case was convicted
this week of fewer charges in Fairfax County Circuit Court and
sentenced by the jury to 30 years in prison.
The abduction and rape of a 19-year-old Chantilly woman in
December 1991 went unsolved until 2005, when Fairfax cold case sex
crimes detectives resubmitted the DNA to a state databank and
matched it to Donald H. Roper, then 39 and living in Fredericksburg.
Identifying Roper led police to a second suspect, Troy Holland, who
was convicted and sentenced to three life terms, which the jury
instructed should be served consecutively.
