UN agencies endeavor to make world's cities safer for women

UNITED NATIONS, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Two United Nations agencies have teamed up to combat violence against women and girls in the world's cities, including by proposing measures such as improved street lighting and female-only modes of transportation.

UN-HABITAT, the agency charged with ensuring adequate shelter for all, and the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) have signed a memorandum of understanding that brings the shelter agency into UNIFEM's existing Global Program on Safe Cities Free of Violence against Women and Girls, the agencies announced here Thursday.
