As a 94-car freight train came barreling toward her minivan stuck on the tracks, she was pulled out by an Elm Grove police officer. But the officer, along with her husband, could not get to the couple's 23-month-old son.

Time ran out and the train hit the minivan, tossing it onto a grassy area. The boy's father, Scott Partenfelder, and Officer John Krahn were severely injured.

The car seat never moved. Mackale was unharmed.

"He doesn't even have a bruise or scratch," Ensley-Partenfelder said in her first interview since the horrific crash.

Instead of watching her son die, Ensley-Partenfelder saw the payoff of the couple's efforts to always ensure their children were safe in their car seats.
