Berry Plastics is really a bit of a knock-off operation.

That's how Ira G. Boots, Berry chairman and chief executive officer, described the company to members of the Rotary Club of Evansville on Tuesday. Asked how many patents Berry Plastics obtains every year, Boots said the number is low.

"We don't try to reinvent the wheel," he said. "We take things you use every day and make them faster and more cost-effective."

One of the company's chief products, the cup, has been around for thousands of years. Berry began

making it out of plastic slightly less than a decade ago.
