More than 60 years ago, three guys in Milwaukee sat around a kitchen table making toy airplanes.

They had a variety of skills and backgrounds, including the toy business, furniture sales and patent law.

Their hobby evolved into Kaysun Corp., a Manitowoc firm that made toy airplane propellers but now makes high-tech items, such as medical devices and military electronics.

The company, with 170 employees, has weathered the recession by focusing on plastic products not easily imported from Asia.

It makes global positioning-system (GPS) devices carried by soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In many cases, the U.S. military has gone from metal to plastic products as a way to reduce weight.
