Metro has received $17.7 million in federal stimulus money from the Federal Transit Administration to repair track beds, purchase emergency evacuation equipment, improve the chemical sensor detection in underground stations and upgrade farecard vending machines, federal officials said this week.

Metro is seeking a total of about $202 million in stimulus funds for various projects.

The FTA grant includes $4 million to expand and improve the chemical sensor detection system at underground stations; $3.5 million to upgrade about 100 fare vending machines to accept debit, credit and SmarTrip cards; and $7.2 million to buy four pieces of large equipment used to replace and repair rail, ...
