Although he was the most prominent of all the Cornish miners,
little has been written about the life and times of Francis Oats -
or "Cap'n Frank" as he was known to one and all in the mining
fraternity, writes Frank Ruhrmund.
This relatively low historical profile makes a new book, Tin And
Diamonds, particularly welcome.
Launched at Levant Mine, where Cap'n Frank had been a director
and his son Francis Freathy was the mine's last manager from 1920
until 1930, Tin And Diamonds is written by his granddaughter Claire
Leith.
A Victorian giant, for several years in the late 19th and early
20th centuries Cap'n Frank reigned supreme in the mining world.
