With its stunning sea views and 19th century pavilion, Sidmouth
Cricket Club is the first-choice location for hundreds of touring
sides.
World-class batsman Viv Richards and Sir Jack Hobbs have played
there and it boasts the formation of Somerset County Cricket Club
among its achievements.
Now Sidmouth Cricket, Tennis, Croquet and Hockey Club has
launched a fundraising drive to preserve one of its most
distinguishing features. It needs pounds40,000 to replace the thatch
on its pavilion roof.
The club was founded in 1823 and its pavilion has been on the
same site since the 1870s.
Club chairman Neil Gamble said: "There are four sections to the
club and nearly 500 adults and youngsters play ...
