Outgoing South West MEP Neil Parish last night called for Eastern European farmers to be treated in the same way as their counterparts in Britain, France and Germany.

The Conservative, who chaired the European Parliament's Agriculture Committee before standing down at this month's election, said the EU must radically reform the Common Agriculture Policy. Payments for land must be the same in all EU countries, he said.

Agriculture ministers from across Europe met in Luxembourg yesterday to begin debating how the CAP will look after its next reform in 2013.

Mr Parish said they must end the discrepancy between the amount of payment received per hectare of agricultural land.
