A door with a white "unit rented" sign opens into a cozy space with shiny wood floors, dark granite countertops and black-framed windows. Downtown Roanoke's streetscape and tall office structures peek in from the distance.

Inside this former manufacturing plant, where workers once stitched cotton undergarments, these white signs are posted on most of the doors.

As of Monday, 76 of the 108 apartments were pre-leased at the Cotton Mill Lofts, downtown's newest and largest rental dwelling.

After a major transformation, this historic 107,000-square-foot brick structure officially opens today. Tenants can move in starting this weekend.
