When workers in Latrobe begin brewing Iron City today,
Pittsburgh's iconic brand of beer will enter a new phase in its
struggle to survive in a business climate that has flattened many
regional breweries.
Breweries such as Iron City Brewing Co. are struggling to compete
against competition from national brands, as well as craft beers,
said Peter Reid, editor of Modern Brewery Age, a trade publication
in Norwalk, Conn.
The number of regional breweries in the United States has dropped
by half over the past 30 years, from about 42 to about 20, said Paul
Gatza, director of the Brewers Association of Boulder, Colo., which
tracks the beer industry.
