Hempfield junior Alex Haines was looking forward to the challenge
of playing baseball in the Johnstown AAABA League against college
players.
But Haines' season ended before it got started.
The left-hander, who posted a 4-3 record with a 1.55 ERA and 57
strikeouts in 40 innings for the Spartans, sustained a season-
ending elbow injury during his first game for Martella's Pharmacy.
He threw a pitch and heard a pop when facing the second batter of
the first inning.
"It was weird," Haines said. "I felt a tingling in my elbow, and
