Swiss chard is a leafy vegetable that belongs to the same family
as the common beet- Family Chenopodiaceae. Its scientific name is
Beta vulgaris variety celic. Swiss chard is native to the
Mediterranean region and is an ancient vegetable, known since the
fourth century B.C. Swiss chard was introduced to the United States
in 1806 and today is a leading crop in Massachusetts.
Swiss chard grows throughout the United States. Many Virginia
gardeners in this area grow Swiss chard in their home gardens and
also in containers. Plants tolerate poor soil and hot weather,
require little attention, and withstand frost and mild freezes. In
