Article: Good news on job front ; First monthly increase in jobs in year, even as unemployment rate edges up

NORWELL - Last Thursday, as the national unemployment rate hovered at a 25-year high, restaurateur Ed Morris opened a new location of The Fours in Norwell with a staff of about 50 new hires.

In Massachusetts, unemployment crept up again last month. But business successes like Morris' helped the state achieve something it hadn't since last May: an increase in the total number of jobs.

The state office of Labor and Workforce Development said in an announcement on Thursday that the state added 4,900 jobs in May, the first monthly increase in a year and the largest since January 2008.
