The dark empty hallway was foreboding, yet something drew me in.
There was a glimmer of light, arcing across the ceiling above a
narrow staircase, so I climbed, the well-warped floorboards wincing
at my every timid step.
A tiny room appeared at the top, bare as a bone gnawed clean by a
ravenous rodent. It had just one window, but too many doors. A
mystery indeed, I mused. I swallowed hard and twisted a rusty knob,
gently, my heart pounding so loudly that surely the spiders would
hear.
Ah, it was only a closet, and I chided myself for my fear.
Tugging at a string that brushed my brow, I snapped a bare light
bulb to life, the dim, flickering glow revealing the outline of yet
another, smaller, ...
