Article: Cheltenham's hotel du vin bucks the trend

The most important single ingredient in the recipe for success in the hotel business is having the right staff.

That's the belief of Tom Ross, who has been general manager of Cheltenham's 49 bedroom Hotel du Vin since it opened in March 2007.

He joined the Winchester Hotel du Vin in 1998 and when Hotel du Vin took on the former Carlton Hotel in Cheltenham's Parabola Road it was with him at the helm.

In June last year the company noticed guest's spending was decreasing. In October Tom took action.

He said: "We trimmed periphery positions, but didn't cut any core hotel staff. Do that and you're on a downward spiral because standards drop.

"This meant we were lean going into 2009 with costs ...
