Article: Haddad Riverfront stage plans unveiled to public: ; Schoenbaum Fund will give $350,000; toward new structure

A new stage to serve as both a performance space and a gateway from the river into downtown Charleston will be built thanks to a $350,000 donation from local philanthropist Betty Schoenbaum.

Schoenbaum, the widow of Shoney's founder Alex Schoenbaum, appeared Tuesday before the city's Riverfront Committee to unveil plans for The Schoenbaum Stage at Haddad Riverfront Park.

Schoenbaum offered to give the city $350,000 to help build the stage, which is expected to have a final cost of $500,000.

"This was my idea, not theirs," Schoenbaum said as the committee stood to applaud her donation. "They didn't come to me; I came to them."

The money came from the Schoenbaum Fund of the Kanawha Valley ...
