Article: City of Redlands now on Twitter

REDLANDS - The city recently opened a Twitter account, hoping to use the social-networking program to give residents instant updates and city news - in 140 characters or less.

"Twitter is just another communication vehicle," said city spokesman Carl Baker. "It's a way to reach people who maybe aren't reading the newspaper.

"It's a way for us to get immediate alerts out."

The city has used Web-based alert systems like Citizenobserver.com for years, Baker said. The city's use of Twitter will be one of the tools the city uses to get information out.
