Article: Left equals rights

From the response I got in the Gazette when I told about my days in Emporia, Kansas, I know the image many readers get when they think of a "left of center" professor in a classroom. OK. I know the image has negative connotations. I think of Stalin and Mao Tse Tung, their purges, their liquidations, their starvation of the masses. How many killed by those two tyrants? Millions and millions. And they are supposedly "on the left." Not to mention the student rebellion of the 1960s. Long hair, dirty clothes, free sex, drugs, hippies and the like. Then you put a guy like me in a classroom. Oh dear! I don't blame you for skepticism and worse.

But our words can betray us, too. The "Left" sat on ...
