Donations from two corporations helped propel The Pittsburgh
Promise scholarship program beyond its goal of raising $15 million
during its first year so that it could make good on an agreement to
net a $10 million pledge from University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center.
It was a tense month before Wednesday's fundraising deadline.
Short nearly $3 million, the program for city school students
secured last-minute contributions of $1.5 million from Highmark Blue
Cross Blue Shield and $400,000 from PNC Bank Corp. to exceed its
goal -- raising $15,168,226 during the fiscal year that ended
