Article: School busing out for some Berkeley kids

About 400 Berkeley elementary school students will feel the pain of budget cuts next fall when they lose the privilege of riding a bus to school.

The Berkeley Unified School District board approved a plan to extend the "walk boundary" from one mile to one-and-a-half miles at its last meeting in June.

Children inside the one and a half mile boundary from their school will have to walk -- unless they have to cross a busy street - - while those outside it can still ride the bus.

The move came when the district cut two bus drivers from its roster to save money over the next two years.
