Article: BadgerCare change weighed State considers dropping Milwaukee County firms

The state is considering a sweeping change in the BadgerCare Plus program in Milwaukee County that could cost health insurers tens of millions in lost revenue.

The Department of Health Services is weighing whether to end its contracts with the private companies -- such as UnitedHealthcare and Managed Health Services -- that now oversee the care and pay the medical claims of more than 150,000 people insured through BadgerCare Plus in Milwaukee County.

The state also is considering making the same changes throughout southeastern Wisconsin to the state program, which covers low- income families with children younger than 19.
