ON THIS equivalent Sunday last year, Andy Roddick had just landed
home in Texas after a July 4 gathering with his wife, Brooklyn, and
her family when the action on the television in the airport lounge
caught his eye.
Up there on screen were Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal engaged in
the final set of their epic Wimbledon final and it left Roddick with
strange mixed feelings. He could hardly bear to look but he could
hardly bear to drag himself away either. "I didn't want to watch,
because it's tough watching when you wish you were there," he
reflects now. "Especially because of the kind of mental state I was
in."
