Kenya's economy up 3.9 percent in first quarter

NAIROBI, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's economy is estimated to surge 3.9 percent in the first quarter of 2009, compared with a contraction of 0.6 percent for the same period of last year, the government said on Thursday.

A statement from the Kenya National Statistics Bureau said the improved GDP growth was a signal of rebound of economic activities which remained subdued throughout 2008 on account of several factors resulting to a low base for the current quarter.
