Article: Councillors show solidarity by refusing to take pay rise

COUNCILLORS in Limavady have voted not to accept a backdated pay rise suggested by Finance Minister Sammy Wilson in solidarity with local people experiencing hardship.

In a letter to borough councillors, Minister Wilson suggested that they accept a 2.5% pay rise backdated to April.

However, after a vote that saw cross-community support, the pay rise was rejected earlier this week.

Ulster Unionist councillor Leslie Cubitt -- who proposed the vote -- said that members thought that in the present economic climate it would be inappropriate to take a pay rise.
