FARMER CITY - Mitch Gardner grew up in a household of metal forgers, so it was sort of expected he'd become a farrier.

But it wasn't always a foregone conclusion.

"My dad kind of talked me out of it," Mitch said, explaining his path to crafting horseshoes wasn't always so clear. "In this area it's a little harder."

But the 2006 graduate of Blue Ridge High School admits he's long held an interest in being a farrier.

"When I was little, I actually talked about it all the time," Gardner said. "Even around here, there are a lot more horses in this area than you realize."
