NEW HAVEN -- An office building at the Science Park business
complex was evacuated Wednesday after a backhoe ruptured a high-
pressure natural gas line, causing a significant leak.
There was no explosion, but the situation was "extremely
hazardous," said Fire Department Battalion Chief John King
The problem started at about 10:30 a.m. when a backhoe digging at
the construction site for a new parking garage severed the plastic,
eight-inch line. The fire alarm sounded the evacuation at the 25
Science Park office building, which is occupied by many Yale
University offices, a few minutes later.
