One-stop shopping. That was the original idea for shopping centers when they began blanketing the Long Island landscape a half- century ago.

And as much as smart-growth advocates encourage people to visit downtown merchants instead, strip centers here still serve as the main source for groceries, hardware, clothes, hair cuts and a cup of coffee.

What makes a good retail center? Location, tenant mix and strength of anchor stores seem to be the most important criteria for attracting customers.
