Article: Jewish doll debuts American Girl creates 10th in line of historical characters

When Rabbi Shari Shamah learned about Rebecca Rubin, the latest addition to the popular American Girl doll lineup, she e-mailed her husband, pleading, "Can I have another one?"

The couple's 5-year-old daughter, Haley, already owns a Samantha doll, whose curly dark hair and fair skin vaguely resemble the child.

But Rebecca is special and reflects Haley in a way that's so much more important to Shamah than appearance.

Rebecca is the first of the American Girl historical characters who is Jewish. A fictional child of Russian immigrants, her accompanying books describe the struggles of a family trying to find its place in America while holding onto its religious traditions.
