SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Zito spent the first half of the season
winning over skeptical Giants fans. Sunday, the left-hander gave his
detractors fresh fodder.
Zito was in trouble almost immediately, allowing three runs
before he recorded an out, and it never got better as he and the
Giants stumbled into the All-Star break with a 10-4 loss to the last-
place San Diego Padres.
The Giants still finished the first half with another series
victory, maintained their lead in the National League wild-card
chase and saw John Bowker hit his first home run since he was called
up from Triple-A last week. But Zito's dreadful outing underscored
