SAN MATEO -- While Gator's has closed, the economic downturn has
not stopped new businesses from taking their chances downtown.
A premium burger joint has opened to fill a void downtown, and
Yogurtouille has new competition in the form of an Asian-style
frozen yogurt shop. A used bookstore also has arrived. All of these
shops are looking an opportunity to reap the benefits of a diverse
downtown.
"We're happy that (the recession) hasn't impacted us as much as
it has in other areas," said Kelly Mitter, executive director of the
Downtown San Mateo Association. "Since November of last year, we've
had people quickly refilling spots as people close."
