Robert A. Dean, 94, whose barbershop was a center of community
activity near Howard University, died July 7 at his home in
Washington of complications from diabetes and dementia.
Mr. Dean came to Washington in the early 1940s and took a job at
the Government Printing Office while working part time at Gregg's
Barbershop on Seventh Street NW.
In the mid-1950s, Mr. Dean opened his own shop at 1837 Seventh
St. NW. In 1963, he moved up the street, to a new building at 1851
Seventh St. Articles in the Washington Afro-American and Spotlight
newspapers praised its "comfortably customized, contemporary decor"
and "policy of truly hospitable service."
