Article: New commander takes helm at American Legion

Before Melissa Sanchez first went to the American Legion Patrick Henry Post 34 about three years ago, she thought she'd find mostly men sitting around drinking and smoking.

While the membership is mostly male and some do drink and smoke, Sanchez admits her misconception was wrong.

That realization came about by volunteering with the legion, and her efforts helped her ascend recently to the post of commander. Sanchez attributes her success as second vice commander last year to her fellow volunteers.

"Throughout the year, we have a lot of volunteers. That's what makes stuff happen," she said. "It's not just a place to go have a Coke on a hot day."
