YOU can rent a tree, plant your own, or grab a basket and find a handy orchard. But however you choose to get hold of your cherries this year, don''t leave it too long.

Over the past 50 years, Britain has lost around 90 per cent of its cherry orchards and now imports account for nearly 95 per cent of all the fruit you see in the shops.

So, with the industry under threat, the cherry season -- June to July -- is an important time for British farmers.
